Developer Diary: Crafting

Overview
Players who love to make things have a lot to look forward to in The Lord of the Rings Online™: Siege of Mirkwood™! With more recipes and materials to create superior equipment, special crafted relics for customising legendary items, new uses for guild reputation items, and an entirely new type of recipe that lets you choose the item being produced, there's never been a better time to be a crafter!

New Recipes in Mirkwood
Being an ally has its advantages! New recipes for weapons, armour, jewellery, and other items can be found amongst the elves of Emyn Lum in Mirkwood.

Siege of Mirkwood introduces a brand new type of recipe that gives crafters more choices when making equipment: the multi-output recipe! By clicking the "Multi-output" button found on the lower-left portion of the crafting panel for some recipes, crafters can choose the item they wish to produce from a list of options (see figures 1-3).

Here we can see: The Malledhrim Sword recipe is selected in the upper portion of the panel (1); the Malledhrim Sword of Striking, one of the potential outputs for this recipe, displayed in the middle portion of the panel (2); the Multi-output button on the lower-left portion of the panel (3).

New Legendary Weapon & Class Item Recipes
Crafting guilds continue to provide players with the means to produce the most sought-after weapons and items found in Middle-earth. New recipes to create powerful Legendary Items can be purchased from vendors located in crafting guild-halls. These give crafters the ability to make the best Third Age and reforged Second Age Legendary Weapons and class items available.

Third Age weapons and class items can be obtained from a variety of sources, including these new crafting recipes, as treasure drops, or chosen as rewards. Second Age weapons and class items (greater than level 60) cannot be found as treasure drops or chosen as rewards in Siege of Mirkwood, and thus crafting provides the only method of acquiring these truly awesome weapons. Note that creating a Reforged Second Age weapon or class item requires an ancient symbol - a special ingredient that can only be found in dangerous, dark places. Like most ingredients, symbols are not bound upon acquisition and can be freely traded.

Crafted Relic Recipes

A new level of customisation for Legendary Weapons and class items arrives with the addition of a fourth relic slot. This fourth - crafted - relic slot, found on both existing and new legendary equipment, will only hold relics made by players.

Recipes can be purchased from vendors in all craft guild-halls to create unique items that guild leaders will accept in exchange for a sealed crafted relic. The recipes available for each guild allow crafters to produce two basic types of crafted relics: Normal and Legendary crafted relics.
Normal Crafted Relics can be slotted into Legendary Weapons and class items to provide a bonus to your agility, fate, might, vitality, will, morale, or power. Each craft guild has the ability to produce one type of Normal Crafted Relic. If a guild different from yours makes the type of crafted relic that you want, do not worry! While in their sealed form, Normal Crafted Relics are not bound and can be freely traded and used by all.

Legendary Crafted Relics can be slotted into Legendary Weapons and class items to provide bonuses to your melee, ranged, tactical, or healing abilities. Each craft guild has the ability to make all types of Legendary Crafted Relics. Note that both sealed and unsealed Legendary Crafted Relics are bound to the crafter, and can only be slotted by those who can make them.
Please note that most crafted relics have minimum item level requirements. For example, a crafted relic with a minimum item level requirement of 55 will require the legendary weapon or class item to be at least that level in order to slot the crafted relic.

New Uses for Craft Guild Reputation Items
Ever wish you had one more large reputation item to use as an ingredient in your guild recipes? Craft guild traders, located in every craft guild-hall, will now accept your unused small and medium guild reputation items in exchange for a larger reputation item of the same crafting tier. Craft guild traders will accept and exchange crafted guild reputation items in the following quantities:
  • Trade in 7 small guild reputation items; get 1 medium guild reputation item in return.
  • Trade in 3 medium guild reputation items; get 1 large guild reputation item in return.

Revised Recipe Ingredients & Craft Experience
While there are lots of exciting new things for crafters in Siege of Mirkwood, we've also taken time to address some of the issues with the ingredients required and craft experience awarded for many existing Jeweller, Metalsmith, Tailor, Weaponsmith, and Woodworker recipes.
  • Reduced required ingredients for many “component” recipes. Some recipes required too many ingredients to make the bindings, plates, hafts, and blades you use to craft armour, shields, and weapons. You will find these recipes now require fewer ingredients, and are in line with similar component recipes.
  • Rebalanced required ingredients for equipment and class item recipes. Auto-granted recipes no longer use any crafted components from other professions (bindings, plates, etc.) and now require the fewest ingredients. Recipes purchased from profession vendors are now only slightly more difficult than auto-granted. Recipes found in treasure or from reputation rewards are now only slightly more difficult than vendor-bought. And lastly, the one-shot recipes found in treasure or from reputation rewards are now the most difficult recipes. One-shot recipes use the most ingredients and typically require a crafted component from another profession, in addition to a rare gem shard or mithril flake.
  • Increased crafting experience awarded for some recipe types. Craft experience awarded for executing recipes now improves with each increase in difficulty. In general, auto-granted recipes award 6 points of crafting experience, recipes purchased from profession vendors award 8 points, recipes found in treasure or from reputation rewards give 10 points, and one-shot recipes found in treasure or from reputation rewards will award 12 points.
