[RP] What is a Role-playing server? How is it different to a normal server?

You may have seen the tag "[RP]" in front of certain servers' names. This indicates that that particular server is a designated Role-playing (RP) server.

On role-playing servers, people take the immersion a step further and act out their characters in game, as if they were that character. It's a little bit like improvisational theatre as each player will react to events in-game spontaneously.
Some people take the role-playing out of the game onto their fansites, blogs and Wikis too making the experience more encompassing. That being said, there is a boundary and [most] role-players understand where RP stops and real life begins :)

The rules on the RP servers are slightly more involved in that they not only include all of the rules that apply to "normal servers" but they also have some additional ones that help to keep the RP experience "protected". Rules include keeping out of character (OOC) chat in the provided channel, using names that adhere to the guidelines and maintaining a positive atmosphere for role-playing.

So when making your server choice, make sure you understand which servers are for role-playing and which aren't so that you choose the server that is right for you!
